What Equipment Types Require Concrete Pads, and What Are the Specs?

Equipment-Type Breakdown

Heavy equipment pads are engineered to the specific machinery they support. Generators in the 25 kW to 500 kW range require 10 to 12 inches of reinforced concrete at 4,000 to 5,000 PSI. HVAC pads should extend 6 inches beyond the equipment footprint at 4,000 PSI minimum. Transformer pads specify 4,500 to 10,000 PSI at 28 days. Heavy industrial machinery such as corrugation equipment and extruders may require pads up to 13 feet wide, 33 feet long, and 2 feet thick.

PSI, Rebar, and Subgrade Requirements

Heavy equipment concrete pads must meet specific strength and reinforcement standards. Commercial pads range from 4 to 12 inches thick at 4,000 PSI or higher. Generator and transformer pads use #4 rebar at a 12-inch spacing minimum; heavy industrial pads require #4 or #5 rebar at a 6-inch spacing both ways. Subgrade compaction should reach 90 to 95 percent of maximum dry density. In Georgia's expansive clay soils, over-excavation with select fill and a 6- to 8-inch gravel base is often required.
